Restoring a Classic Rolex Submariner 1680
This page will soon feature a story about the Rolex Submariner 1680 and the work we've done on it, with pictures to follow shortly. In the meantime, feel free to browse through pictures of the other watches we've worked on.
Overview:
We’re currently working on a Rolex 1680, a classic model with a storied history. The watch is well-regarded for its robust design and iconic features. However, it has an over-polished case that needs careful restoration to bring it back to its original form.
Restoration Process:
Our restoration process begins with assessing the extent of the over-polishing. We employ laser welding to repair and rebuild the areas where the original lines and angles have been compromised. This technique allows us to add material precisely where it’s needed without affecting the surrounding areas.
Lapping and Refinishing:
After the laser welding, we use lapping techniques to carefully refine the case surface. This process involves gradually smoothing and reshaping the case to restore its original contours and polish. Our goal is to achieve a finish that highlights the watch’s original design while maintaining its vintage charm.
Final Touches:
Once the case is restored and lapped, we conduct a thorough inspection to ensure everything is in perfect condition. The watch will then undergo a final polishing to enhance its overall look while respecting the vintage character of the piece.
